The Quick and Easy Guide to Fall and Winter Pond Maintenance

Fall and winter pond maintenance make a big difference. It can prevent major damage caused by the elements and ensure your setup looks spectacular through the warmer months. It’s also a good method for spotting problems before they become too expensive to fix.

One of the first chores necessary for the season is cleaning out your pond. This means clearing out leaves and the grime that’s accumulated at the bottom. If you have fish, such as goldfish or Koi, in the pond, clean it out slowly. In areas where temperatures drop below freezing, you’ll have to relocate your living elements during the coldest months and drain your pond completely. Take care to assess your pond liner for cracks or cuts, and cover the area sufficiently to keep out ice, snow, and pests.

Because pond maintenance can inadvertently force your water to cycle, it’s best to spread this chore out over three or four weeks if you have living plants or fish. Make sure to test the water, and add in beneficial bacteria whenever you change the water or clean out the bottom of the pond.

You also want to make sure your pond pump housing stays insulated. If you have a submersible pump, clean it out well and evaluate it for any performance issues. This prolongs the life of your equipment. Also ensure the power source stays protected.
