Repairing Your Pipes the Right Way

There are few sounds worse than that of dripping or spraying water, usually signaling a plumbing emergency or at the least, an expensive repair, especially when you’ve already repaired that part just to have it fail again. Here are some solutions the professionals use to fix it once and forget about it:

Compression Fittings

Compression fittings are a good temporary fix on lengths of pipe that are not near a bend and where they are not expected to provide mechanical support to the pipes. They basically fit the pipe against an o-ring or similar gasket, and then a nut is tightened to compress against the pipe and hold it into place. They’re not typically considered a permanent solution but can get you by for an extended length of time.

Slip Fix Repair Couplings

A slip fix coupling basically telescopes to cover the area that is leaking. You’ll cut the pipes so the space is the length of the fully extended coupling. It’s an awesome fix in tight quarters where you don’t have room to flex PVC pipes out of and into position for the repair. If the pipes aren’t or can’t be cut to the length of the fully extended coupling, you’ll need to put a thrusting block or stakes in to keep it from failing because of movement later on.

Kwik Repair Fittings

Kwik brand repair fittings are similar to the slip fix repair couplings, but extend on both ends, perfect where thrust blocking or staking is impractical due to space or architectural constraints. These fittings are also available as tees.

No-Hub Couplings

When you need to connect plastic and metal waste lines, no-hub couplings are the way to go. These rubber pieces connect to each pipe and have a clamp that tightens, keeping them in place.

Pipe Repair Clamps

When you just can’t remove the pipe due to engineering specs, these repair clamps seal the pipe by tightening a sheet of metal around the outside of it, blocking the leak.

Pipe Repair Compounds

Other items you can use to repair your pipes include wraps and putty. These items patch the leak, often buying you time to determine a more permanent repair.
