If your yard has crabgrass, you’d probably like to get rid of it. Here are three tips to eliminate crabgrass from your lawn:

1. As soon as you see crabgrass growing, pull it out. This can actually be an effective way to eliminate crabgrass. However, if the crabgrass is fully grown with a seed head that’s spread out, don’t touch it. You’ll probably scatter a bunch seeds and end up with even more crabgrass.

2. Spray a post-emergent herbicide (weed killer) on crabgrass after it’s sprouted and hard to pull out.You usually apply this type of weed killer with a hand pump sprayer on a hot day with little wind. You may need to spray the crabgrass a few days later. Remember it usually takes a couple of weeks for a herbicide to completely kill crabgrass.

3. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in the winter and fall. Applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the late winter and again in the early fall can prevent weeds (like crabgrass) from germinating, thus stopping it before it gets started.

Once you get rid of crabgrass, one of the best ways to prevent it from coming back is to have a healthy lawn with lots of grass blades to prevent crabgrass from sprouting.
