Sprinklers

Three problems that may be why your sprinkler isn’t working

Is your lawn starting to brown up? Did you try to run the sprinkler system and nothing happened? When you count on your irrigation system to keep your lawn and home looking great, having your system fail is an inconvenience. To find out what’s wrong so you can fix it, check for these three problems:

Problem #1: No Incoming Water

The first place to check your system is whether it has any water going into it. Have you had a break or clog in the line going to your system? Has the water been shut off for the winter and needs to be turned back on? Is it still cold enough that you could have a line frozen?
If there’s no water getting to your system, it won’t work. Basic checks are easy for most homeowners by turning off your main water valve, disconnecting the incoming water line to your system, and then turning it on again very slightly to see if water appears.

Problem #2: No Outgoing Water

If you’ve checked your water coming into the system and it’s okay, it’s time to check whether your water can get to your sprinklers. Can you blow air through the system? Are the spray head bodies able to move up and down, or are they stuck?

If the system is clogged, you can try back blowing it by hooking up water to the far end of the system. If your spray heads aren’t coming up, check them for mechanical damage.

Problem #3: No Power to the System

Another possible source to consider is whether there’s any power getting to your system. Electricity runs many of the controls used to keep your system working. Valves, weather-based systems, and similar components may not work if there’s no power to your system.

If your system has a solenoid valve, it will either freeze shut or open if the power goes out. An automated system won’t kick in when batteries or power aren’t available. Check if the system is getting power – if not, restoring the power should fix the problem.
