Squishy lawn

You don’t have to live with water collecting and staying in your yard after a rain.

You know it’s going to happen. For days on end after a rainstorm, your yard stays wet and squishy. How can you fix it? There are a few solutions to your squishy lawn, but they almost universally come down to one issue, drainage.

When your lawn is poorly drained, water can’t escape after a rainstorm, and your yard turns into a boggy mess. There are a few different situations that can cause this problem. Are you in a low spot where rainwater collects after a storm? Does your lawn have poor drainage, so water stays put instead of running off? Do you have a compaction layer in your soil such as a fragipan or plow pan? Any of these issues will lead to boggy lawns, but they can all be fixed with an improved drainage system.

To improve drainage in your lawn, you’ll want to get the lay of the land first. Is there a lower location you can drain your yard into? Would adjusting the contours of your lawn help it drain more easily? You should be looking to make improvements that will help your lawn drain without making it drain so quickly that you end up with erosion.

After you’ve studied how to adjust your lawn’s contours to drain better, consider adding drainage features that will help move water through your landscape. Corrugated pipe and channel drains help move large amounts of water through your landscape to a drain emitter further down the slope. You can also investigate the possibility of feeding into your city’s storm sewer if possible, or creating a rain garden where the water will leave the system. You can also use catch basins to collect water and then pipe it to an area where it can be discharged safely. Catch basins are covered with grates. If regular grates aren’t aesthetically pleasing, you can use any number of decorative grates to improve the appearance.

If you’re stuck in a low area and can’t get into a sewer system, you could consider a Flo-Well that will store the rainwater and allow it to seep into the ground over time. Just remember, standing bodies of water can turn into a breeding ground for mosquitoes, so keep the water moving.
