Common Paver Problems

Did you know that excessive amounts of standing water or water runoff can cause your pavers to pop up out of the ground? Perhaps they are causing an uneven walkway or driveway, or maybe they are above the ground completely. No matter the case, if your pavers are popping up out of the ground, then we have a few problem solving solutions to help you get your driveway or walkway back into top shape.

Simple Solutions to Common Paver Problems

When a paver pops up out of the ground it can cause the driveway or walkway to become uneven, fixed edges to disappear, or water can begin to puddle in various places. To combat these unsightly paver problems, we have gathered together a few helpful solutions.

  • Solution 1: When pavers aren’t installed deep enough or at an even thickness, they can become uneven. In addition, soils that have a lot of clay tend to hold more water than soils that are primarily sand. When the soil holds additional water it tends to expand more when the ground freezes, which can push the pavers up. To resolve uneven pavers, you might need to reinstall portions of your driveway or walkway. Make sure that you install the pavers at a deep enough setting using a tamped sand base to allow for better drainage.
  • Solution 2: If it seems like the fixed edges are beginning to disappear, chances are the settling bed or base has washed out from under the pavers. Try using a piece of filter fabric to patch the existing base or create a new base. Be sure to install grates or drains to help water runoff move away from the pavers, rather than letting the water erode the existing soil base.
  • Solution 3: If you notice that water has begun to puddle on the pavers, then chances are the base was not installed on the proper pitch or the base has slowly settled over time. To resolve this issue, pull up the area that has settled, add more base, re-compact the area, and reinstall the pavers. Make sure that you don’t let excessive water runoff or stagnant water sit on the pavers for an extended period of time. Water can begin to erode the base and cause unsightly puddles that could become a breeding ground for gnats, mosquitoes, and other insects.

Even pavers in the walkway or driveway will create a visually appealing area.
