Pond Liner Installation

A backyard pond is one of the most interesting additions you can make to your outdoor living area. Whether you choose a basic pool, one with a waterfall or decide to use your pond to house koi or other fish, a pond adds character and charm to nearly any space. If you are adding a pond to a space yourself, you will likely want to include some form of liner. Learn more about the two basic types and the basics of installation so you can get your pond off to a great start!

Rigid Liner

Rigid liners look similar to a child’s swimming pool. They are a large “shell” made of hard plastic. They generally come in a few sizes and shapes. However, you do not have much flexibility with them. To install a rigid liner you will have to dig your pond in the same shape as the liner. However, you then simply drop in the liner and secure with dirt around the edges. Installation is simple; however, the lack of flexibility does make it more suited to a new pond installation rather than trying to clean up an old pond.

Flexible Liners

Flexible liners look similar to tarp. However, the strength and makeup of the liner is much more suited to building or redoing a pond. Since the bottom is flexible, you can shape the pond to your specifications. If you have a deep pond or want a less-than-popular shape, this may be your best option.

Digging the space is simple. You can either use a pre-existing pond space or dig to a size that suits your needs. Next, you lay an insulation layer. These come in many different types but all have the same purpose—to protect your flexible liner and keep the pond stable. After this, lay the liner in place and secure the edges with stakes, crimps or other tools included with your liner. Add water slowly to allow the pond to settle. Then, cut away the excess liner on the edges, cover with a bit of dirt and use rocks or bricks around the edge to hold the liner in place and make the pond look “finished.”
