How to Keep Your Drip Irrigation System in Tip-Top Shape

Drip irrigation is a godsend. It will save you labor, money, and time. If you have a drip irrigation system, then you will want to keep in operating at peak performance. Here are a few tips to help you succeed.

1. Clean the filter.
Drip irrigation systems large or small work best with clean water. Sand, silt, and algae can clog the small openings of drip emitters. Periodically cleaning a filter is a lot easier than finding and replacing clogged emitters. Many times a clogged emitter isn’t found until a plant shows signs of stress from not receiving enough water.

2. Check the emitters and tubing for damage
. Emitters clog, or emitter lines can become damaged, which prevents the system from delivering water to the plants along that section. Monitoring plant health is the easiest way to check for leaks, emitter issues, or line crimps. When you turn the system on, you should also look for pin-hole leaks. These are usually evidenced by a small jet of water. Pin-hole leaks are very easy to repair. They cause a major pressure drain which then causes the system to struggle to deliver water to the end of the line. That means plants at the end of the line will suffer.
