A Starter Guide to Sprinkler Installation

We know that being your own handyman isn’t always easy. Whether you’re trying to repair that leaky pipe or figure out the difference between different types of valves, dealing with your own sprinkler systems just might not come naturally to you. Well, that’s okay. If you need to install a sprinkler pump and are feeling a little lost, here’s a handy starter guide to get you going.

Take Your Measurements

The specifications of your sprinkler pump will depend on two measurements, flow rate and pressure. To determine these measurements, you will need:

  • A pressure gauge
  • A 5-gallon bucket
  • A timer or watch

To determine pressure, simply attach the pressure gauge to the faucet or pipe to which you will then connect the pump and turn on the water. Write down the reading. Figuring out flow rate is a little trickier. Put the bucket under the faucet or pipe, turn it on, and measure how long it takes to fill. Divide 5 by the number of seconds to get gallons per second, then convert to gallons per hour by multiplying by 3600.

Gather Your Supplies

You now have what everything you need to select a sprinkler pump. Select one rated to handle your system’s requirements. You’ll then need to get the rest of the parts that are needed. If you’re like most people (i.e. not an expert), you’ll do well with a sprinkler pump parts kit, which contains all the necessary supplies in addition to your pump. Essentially, though, you will need a relay controller or a timer to regulate the sprinkler system and some plumber’s tape.

Put In the Pump

Now it’s time to install your pump, which is relatively simple. Connect the pump’s inlet valve to the water supply, which is the faucet or pipe leading from the house. Connect the outlet to the sprinkler system, which is often a pipe that branches into a series of sprinklers. Wrap any connections with tape. Mount the timer on a wall or the side of a shed (out of direct sunlight) and connect it to the pump as well. Now bury the pump and start using it!
