Don’t Ignore Your Irrigation System During Winter

3 Things to Check While Your Irrigation System is Down for the Winter

Checking your irrigation system during winter is important and it’s also quite easy to do. Paying attention to your system during the off season can save you time and trouble in the spring. Here are few things to keep an eye on this winter:

1. Pay attention to your plants. Some plants need water during the winter, especially if the season is dry in your area. If the condition of your plants is failing, you’ll need to water them by hand. Don’t be tempted to turn on your irrigation system for a periodic watering during cold weather. Instead, keep the materials you need ready in case a cold, dry season demands special attention.

2. Check your controller’s rain sensors. Rain sensors are mounted outdoors and are susceptible to damage from snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. Many sensors are offered in wireless versions and this makes it easier to remove phem and bring them indoors for the winter.

3. Finally, check your hose bibbs and backflow preventers. Sometimes water can get trapped in a hose bib and cause it to fracture. This crack will cause a geyser once you turn the water on. Backflow preventers can also fracture if water is trapped in them so make sure you drain the system thoroughly and keep it off through the rest of the cold season.

It’s always a good idea to check out your system routinely, even though it is shut down. We offer a huge supply of irrigation systems and parts for necessary repairs all year long.
