A pressure reducer (or pressure regulator) is required because most water pressure going into the drip system is too high for the tubing. The fittings connecting all the hoses together are “dry fitted” meaning the fittings and hose are held together by the tightness of the tubing.  If too much pressure goes through the tubing, the tube will blow off the fitting, stopping the drip from working properly and making a muddy mess.
